MARIETTE was designed by Nathanael G. Herreshoff for J. Frederick Brown of Boston, a successful wool merchant, who raced and cruised MARIETTE along the North and Shore Shores of Boston from 1916 to 1927. That year, Francis B. Crowninshield purchased the yacht and renamed her CLEOPATRA'S BARGE 11, after the first American yacht built by his ancestor. Crowninshield chronicled his voyages from the Chesapeake to Penobscott Bay in a log which he published in 1948. CLEOPATRA'S BARGE II was in commission for 13 years, until she was taken over by the U.S. government in 1942. MARIETTE was converted to a charter yacht in the Caribbean in the 1970s before leaving for La Spezia, Italy for a complete rebuild in 1982 by Cantieri Navali. Thomas J. Perkins, of San Francisco, purchased MARIETTE in 1995 from her Italian owner. Mr. Perkins returned MARIETTE to her original rig and configuration at the Beconcini yard in Italy. For the first time in almost fifty years, MARIETTE has returned to New England waters to compete in the New York Yacht Club's prestigious Atlantic Challenge. Afterwards, MARIETTE will have the Mediterranean as her home racing waters.
